California

Both freshmen and seniors at two flagship California universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational non-profit, failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of California (Berkeley) and Stanford University. On average seniors at Berkeley scored an “F.” Significantly, freshmen actually did better than seniors by 5.6%. Stanford University seniors scored a “D,” recognizing the correct answer 63% of the time.

Colorado

Both freshmen and seniors at Colorado universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational non-profit, failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Colorado State University. Entering freshmen at these Colorado campuses were among the least well prepared in the nation, scoring only 40% correct on the multiple choice test. On average seniors received a failing “F,” recognizing the correct answer only 50% of the time, 10% better than freshmen.

Results for seniors at each school are as follows:

  • University of Colorado: 48.6% correct, or an “F.”
  • Colorado State University: 51.5% correct, or an “F.”

Florida

Both freshmen and seniors at Florida universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of Florida, Florida Memorial University, and the University of West Florida.

On average, Florida seniors scored an “F,” recognizing the correct answer only 43% of the time. Seniors outscored entering freshmen at these Florida campuses by only 1.4%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

Results for seniors at each school are as follows:

  • University of Florida: 47.8% correct, or an “F.”
  • Florida Memorial University: 31.2% correct, or an “F.”
  • University of West Florida: 42.8% correct, or an “F.”

Massachusetts

Both freshmen and seniors at Massachusetts universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational non-profit, received a “D” on a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of Massachusetts (Boston), MIT, Harvard University, and Williams College. On average Massachusetts seniors recognized the correct answer only 61% of the time. Seniors outscored entering freshmen at these Massachusetts campuses by only 1.9%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

Results for seniors at each school are as follows:

  • University of Massachusetts (Boston): 45.5% correct, or an “F.”
  • Harvard University: 69.7% correct, or a “D.”
  • MIT: 63.5% correct, or a “D.”
  • Williams College: 68.4% correct, or a “D.”

Michigan

Both freshmen and seniors at the University of Michigan surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational non-profit, failed a basic test on American history and institutions. On average University of Michigan seniors scored an “F,” recognizing the right answer only 52% of the time. Significantly, seniors did no better than freshmen, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

North Carolina

Both freshmen and seniors at North Carolina universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of North Carolina, Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and Appalachian State University.

On average, North Carolina seniors scored an “F,” recognizing the correct answer only 50% of the time. Seniors outscored entering freshmen at these North Carolina campuses by only 1.5%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

Results for seniors at each school are as follows:

  • University of North Carolina: 56.5% correct, or an “F.”
  • Duke University: 58.3% correct, or an “F.” Duke freshmen outscored Duke seniors.
  • North Carolina Central University: 33.7% correct, or an “F.”
  • Appalachian State University: 43.4% correct, or an “F.”

Texas

Both freshmen and seniors at Texas universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of Texas, Baylor University, and West Texas A&M.

On average, Texas seniors scored an “F,” recognizing the correct answer only 51% of the time. Seniors outscored entering freshmen at these Texas campuses by only 2.9%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

Results for seniors at each school are as follows:

  • University of Texas: 55.8% correct, or an “F.”
  • Baylor University: 50.2% correct, or an “F.”
  • West Texas A&M;: 43.5% correct, or an “F.”

Virginia

Both freshmen and seniors at Virginia universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University, and Lynchburg College.

On average, Virginia seniors scored a low “D,” recognizing the correct answer only 60% of the time. Disappointing as this result may be, it is slightly better than the national average of 53%. Seniors outscored entering freshmen at these Virginia campuses by only 1.7%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

Results for seniors at each school are as follows:

  • University of Virginia: 62.6% correct, or a “D.” Freshmen at Virginia scored slightly better than seniors.
  • Washington and Lee University: 63.8% correct, or a “D.”
  • Lynchburg College: 47.3% correct, or an “F.”

Washington (State)

Both freshmen and seniors at the University of Washington surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational non-profit, failed a basic test on American history and institutions. On average University of Washington seniors scored an “F,” recognizing the right answer only 50% of the time. Significantly, senior scores improved over freshmen scores by only 1.8%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

Washington, DC

Both freshmen and seniors at DC-area universities surveyed by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational non-profit, failed a basic test on American history and institutions. The test was administered to students at the Georgetown University, American University, George Mason University, and Catholic University. On average seniors at these four universities scored a low “D,” recognizing the correct answer only 61% of the time.

Disappointing as this result may be, it is slightly better than the national average of 53%. Seniors outscored entering freshmen at these campuses by only 1.6%, reflecting low levels of learning about these subjects.

  • Georgetown University: 68% correct, or a “D.”
  • American University: 64% correct, or a “D.”
  • George Mason University: 56% correct, or an “F.”
  • Catholic University: 49% correct, or an “F.”
